Why Broken Krayonz?

Crayons are purchased for children over and over throughout their young years and no matter the creed, location or nationality of the child, there is a level of disappointment each time a crayon breaks while coloring. There may even be tears. Crayons are often discarded when they break and eventually, they are replaced, with new, sharp, whole crayons.

Like crayons, many people are broken. Through abuse, natural disaster, ailment and lack of resource. Regardless of age when this break occurs, the world is known for discarding the broken person, leaving them a lifetime's work of healing, if the healing ever occurs at all. Too many times the break results in homelessness, mental and emotional instability, mistrust, suicide and unfortunately, the list goes on and on.

But what if that human is given the support, continuous positive affirmation and individual tools to effectively communicate any emotion before the age of 6? Their beginning years allow them the freedom to just be, instilling the confidence that challenges will be overcome and that differences make us better, together. We should be taught that bandages last longer when cared for properly so we understand that being healthy and whole is a work that's worth it.

If the work is put in at an earlier age, the impact of the breaks won't be seen as negative during adulthood because it's then understood that the break of the crayon resulted in a larger quantity. That one became two. That a harsh experience can still lead to victory. That homelessness can be overcome and adversity can be reframed. That suicide isn't an option. With intention, we'd mature to know that the breaks should be expected. And that regardless of the number of breaks, the tears in the label or the dullness of the end, it's purpose and ability to color never changed.

Because she is a Broken Krayon. And she's still coloring.
